GROWING LITTLE CITIZENS
Who are the people in our
neighbourhood? There is nothing
like a community walk to find
out. First grade students hit the
streets of Cedarvale as part of
our social science curriculum to
visit local businesses, restaurants
and the police station. Building
citizens of the world begins right
outside our door.
BODY AND BRAIN FITNESS
What better way to start the day
than with a workout? Every morning,
students head to the gym for 20
minutes of daily physical activity that
includes dance, sports and fitness.
Once a week, the focus is on character-
building. Groups include kids from
different grades so that the little ones
form bonds with older students. Grade
5 students are mentors-in-training in
this invaluable leadership exercise.
DESIGN THINKING
As a design thinking exercise, grade 1 students identify a problem they have
experienced and then design a pair of shoes that might solve it. First
up: students learn about steel, rubber and stitching. Then they take
a trip to the Bata Museum for creative inspiration. And finally it's time
for design. One little boy who could never reach the top
shelf in his room designed shoes with springs so he could
jump up. Another student created shoes with a built-
in light so she could see better at night. And the
boy who didn't like changing from sneakers
to hockey skates built shoes with retractable
blades. Original thinking starts young.
